Here are some of the things I always have to keep telling myself!
-
Start with a Game Plan
🎯 Decide on your strategy before you step on court. Know how and where you want to play, and which opponent and vulnerability to target. This makes decision making easier and cuts out uncertainty during points....which means fewer errors! -
Stay Calm & Breathe
🧘♂️ Bring less physical energy, more calmness and focus. Use deep breaths between points to reset. -
Focus on the First Point
🔥 Concentrate on winning the first point of each game—it’s a big mental advantage. -
Win the First Game Point
🏆 Focus harder on winning the first game point you get in a game. Don’t focus on the second or third if you can help it—this takes pressure off. Some points are much bigger than others...learn to recognise them -
Use Positive Body Language
💪 Show confidence, even if you’re not feeling it. Don’t let your partner see you frustrated—encourage them relentlessly. -
Have a Goldfish Memory
🐟 (Ted Lasso style!) Forget mistakes instantly. Don’t give away 2 or even 3 points for the price of 1. -
Play to Win Points Efficiently
🎲 Aim to win points on the 2nd or even 3rd put away or by forcing errors. Do not go for early riskier put aways! -
Stay Patient & Calm
⏳ Patience is the most successful way to win points. If you’re getting overwhelmed, take a few deep breaths to slow down and refocus. -
Control Your Heart Rate
❤️ Stay calm between points, especially after long rallies. Don’t let your heart rate or emotions control your play. -
Set a Clear Intention
📝 Know exactly what you want to focus on and improve each day you play.
